Window Handles

Window handles come in a variety of styles and colors to fit your home. They have a locking mechanism concealed within the frame to open and close your double glazed windows.

When replacing your handle it is important to check the spindle length. This is the length at which the nose extends out from the base plate or the distance it goes into lock.

Espag Handles

Espag handles are used to operate multi-point locks within double-glazed windows. The handle can be rotated around the window to increase security. Our collection of espagnolette window handles include straight and cranked designs with a variety of finishes including chrome, brass black, and forged.

Each handle is constructed of durable die cast zinc and powder coated or plated for high resistance to corrosion and impact resistance, as well as protection against wear. They are designed to be used on uPVC or aluminum windows that feature an espagnolette or shot bolt mechanism. They can be locked into the closed position with a key or a push button.

Typically, espagnolette handles have 7mm squared spindles that is inserted into the lever backplate and fits into a lock mechanism in the sash frame, turning the handle will activate the lock. It is crucial to consider the spindle size when choosing a new handle for your espagnolette window. This will determine how it will open. The spindle's size will be marked on the backplate of the handle with numbers such as '5 3/4', '5' or '2/3' and this is the one you must test against your current handle to ensure it will fit.

Cranked windows with espagnolette handles are a different option to straight ones and are offered in left-handed (opened clockwise) or right-handed (opened anti-clockwise) variants based on the way you open your window. The cranked design gives you more space to open the window. This is ideal for windows close to the frame.

The cockspur handle is a different variant on the espagnolette style, this time with a cockspur nose that is closed onto a striker plate in a similar way to a multi-point espagnolette lock. This handle is a great repair option for old cockspur handles on UPVC or aluminum windows.

The key-lock insert can be used for both cockspur and cranked models. They are available with a choice of handing and come with a blanking plug in black, if you prefer to keep your window handle locked or want to use it solely as a fire egress.

They are usually found on older windows made of aluminium or uPVC casement windows which don't have an internal mechanism for securing the frame. Therefore, they depend on the cockspur handle to hold them together.

Tilt and Turn Handles

Tilt and turn windows are becoming more popular due to their functionality, efficiency and the benefits they offer. They offer a variety of opening options and can be opened in various ways which helps with cleaning convenience, allowing fresh air to enter the home or allowing for a fire escape.

They function in a similar manner to an espagnolette handle but come with additional functions, making them better suited to tilt and turn-style windows. The lever can be placed downwards when it's locked to close the window and 90 degrees to open the window like a door, or it can be positioned upwards to open the window in normal fashion.

They feature a multipoint lock mechanism that is more effective than double-glazed casement windows to prevent forced entry. The outer bottom hinge has metal locking pins that are inserted into a rail made of steel along the inner frame when the handle is in a closed position. The window's interior is secured by two more hinges in the bottom corners which can be opened inwards, a feature which makes them ideal for windows with larger openings and also great for ventilation.

The open mode is activated by turning the handle in such a way that it is facing up. It opens the window in a vertical tilt that allows for better ventilation and makes cleaning easier. This is because the sash can be pulled backwards from either side of the window to create a gap enough for an incline or ladder to fit through.

Tilt-and-turn handles are typically larger than espag and cockspur handles due to the fact that they need to be able handle the larger and heavier frame sizes. They are typically spindle-based and utilize the same kind of fixings that are used in a standard handle like a cockspur or espag, but will have wider bases and typically larger screw centres.

uPVC frames are the most popular windows made of uPVC because they are less expensive than timber or aluminium and don't require painting but there are also many wood effect finishes available. Aluminium is a different option for these kinds of windows as it can be painted in any colour to match the existing look of your home. It is also lighter than uPVC.

The spade or blade handle is one of the most commonly used kinds of handles. These are commonly used on tilt and turn or casement-style uPVC windows. The lever is used to operate either a catch, latch or multi-point locking mechanism. The catch is usually connected to a peg keep or mortice keep that is placed within the frame of your window and offers more security and stability.

These types of handles are able to be used on the latest uPVC double-glazed casement or tilt and turn windows. They are designed for greater ergonomics and provide more leverage to open windows, making them easier. They come in a variety of styles to fit any interior design.

The window can be closed and locked more securely. Handles are available in different sizes to fit frames of different sizes. Some manufacturers also offer straight and bent versions.

You can also up the security of your uPVC windows by selecting handles that have keys that lock the window.
